Catabotrys is a genus of ascomycetous fungi recognized in plant pathology as a causative agent of bark necrosis and branch cankers on various woody plants. As a pathogen, it disrupts the vascular system by attacking the cortex and cambium layers, which eventually leads to the wilting and death of twigs and stems. This disease is particularly problematic for ornamental trees and shrubs.

The host range of Catabotrys primarily includes various woody ornamental species. The fungus is an opportunistic pathogen, meaning it most aggressively attacks plants that are already stressed due to poor soil conditions, water deficit, or physical damage. Once established, the fungus can cause significant dieback, which reduces the aesthetic and structural integrity of the affected plant.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as dark, depressed lesions on the bark. As the disease progresses, these lesions expand and can girdle the branch, cutting off the supply of nutrients and water. In advanced stages, small, black fruiting bodies develop on the surface of the bark. These structures emerge through the epidermis and are often visible to the naked eye during humid weather conditions.

The spread of the fungus is heavily dependent on moisture and humidity. Spores are primarily dispersed through rain splash, wind, and movement of contaminated pruning tools. Moist, stagnant air environments are ideal for the germination of spores, especially if the bark has been compromised by insect damage or environmental factors like frost cracks or heavy solar exposure.

Management of Catabotrys requires a preventative and therapeutic approach to minimize damage to plant collections. Key control strategies include:

  • Regular sanitary pruning of affected branches well below the site of infection.
  • Sterilizing all pruning equipment to prevent mechanical transmission of the pathogen.
  • Applying copper-based fungicidal sprays to protect wounds and potential entry points.
  • Maintaining optimal vigor through proper fertilization, mulching, and irrigation to boost plant defense.
