Catapyrenium pilosellum is a species of crustose lichen belonging to the family Verrucariaceae. In agricultural contexts, it is often misidentified as a parasitic plant disease, although, in biological terms, it is an epiphyte that uses the bark of a plant or the soil surface as a substrate for growth.
The organism does not directly invade the plant tissues to extract nutrients, but its presence acts as a bioindicator of the tree’s physiological state. A healthy, vigorous tree typically resists heavy colonization by such lichens, whereas stressed or aging plants become ideal hosts for their development.
Symptoms appear as small, scaly, brownish or olive-colored patches on the bark of trunks and main branches. As these patches expand, they form a hardened layer that adheres tightly to the surface, potentially altering the bark's moisture-retention properties and blocking essential gas exchange.
The development of this lichen is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity, lack of pruning, and low airflow within the canopy. These conditions allow for the spores of the lichen to germinate and establish colonies, particularly on the shaded sides of a tree.
