Catinella is a genus of fungi, with Catinella olivacea being the most recognized species. It typically acts as a saprotrophic fungus that thrives on decaying plant material, but under specific conditions, it can become an opportunistic parasite, colonizing weakened or dying woody plants and contributing to wood rot.
The host range of this fungus includes various broad-leaved trees such as oaks, beeches, and maples. The pathogen is often found in forest ecosystems but can also pose a risk to ornamental trees in landscapes if the plants have been stressed by drought, poor soil quality, or mechanical injury.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the emergence of distinctive cup-shaped, olive-to-black fruiting bodies on the bark or wood surface. Inside the tree, the mycelium secretes enzymes that degrade cellulose and lignin, causing the wood to lose its structural integrity and eventually become soft and friable.
Environmental conditions conducive to the spread of Catinella include prolonged periods of high humidity, frequent rainfall, and insufficient aeration within the canopy or surrounding area. The fungal spores are primarily dispersed through the air, seeking out sites of entry such as pruning wounds, cracks, or frost damage on the trunk.
Integrated pest management strategies are essential to mitigate the risk posed by this fungus:
- implementing proper pruning techniques to avoid leaving large, untreated wounds;
- improving tree vigor through fertilization and adequate irrigation;
- prompt removal of dead or heavily infested wood to reduce spore load;
- applying protective sealants to major pruning sites to prevent pathogen entry.
