The host range primarily includes young deciduous trees and certain woody shrubs. These plants are particularly vulnerable when their natural bark protection is compromised by environmental stress, frost cracks, or mechanical damage caused during pruning or transport, providing a gateway for the fungus to establish itself.
Symptoms often manifest as distinct, oily-looking patches on the bark surface, which give the disease its descriptive name. As the fungal infection advances, these areas may become spongy or sunken, eventually developing cracks. In advanced stages, one might observe a glistening, greasy exudate on the bark, accompanied by leaf chlorosis or premature senescence in the affected limbs.
