Description
Cellypha is a genus of basidiomycete fungi belonging to the family Cyphellaceae. In an agronomic context, these fungi are primarily known for their role as wood-decaying organisms. While often acting as saprotrophs on dead organic matter, they can colonize weakened or stressed woody plants, contributing to the decay of bark and underlying tissues.
The causal agent manifests as small, cup-shaped or tubular basidiocarps, typically white or cream-colored. These reproductive structures appear on the surface of branches and stems, indicating the colonization of the substrate. The infection usually occurs when a plant's natural defense mechanisms are compromised, allowing the fungus to penetrate the outer layers of the wood.
This pathogen primarily affects deciduous trees and various ornamental shrubs. It thrives on weakened specimens, often settling on branches that have already been damaged by frost, mechanical injury, or other primary pathogens. The presence of the fungus can further weaken the plant, leading to stunted growth and premature tissue necrosis.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Cellypha. High humidity levels, prolonged rainfall, and poor airflow within the plant canopy create an ideal environment for spore germination and mycelial expansion. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind, allowing for quick transmission between susceptible hosts in dense plantations.
