Description

Cenococcum graniforme is a widespread ascomycete fungus commonly known for its role in forming ectomycorrhizal associations with the root systems of various tree species. While traditionally considered a beneficial symbiont that assists in nutrient uptake, under specific environmental stressors, it can shift its functional role, causing physiological stress to the host plant.

This fungus primarily affects a broad range of forest species, including conifers like pines and spruces, as well as deciduous trees such as oaks and beeches. It is most frequently encountered in nutrient-poor soils and environments prone to frequent drought, where the balance between the tree and the fungus is susceptible to disruption.

Symptoms of colonization include the appearance of small, coal-black, star-shaped sclerotia on the root surface, giving the root tips a characteristic dark, crusty appearance. In cases of adverse impact, infected seedlings may exhibit reduced vigor, yellowing of needles or leaves, and a noticeable decrease in overall biomass production due to limited nutrient absorption.

The development of Cenococcum graniforme is highly correlated with moisture availability. It is remarkably drought-tolerant, which allows it to persist in habitats where other mycorrhizal species cannot survive. Its ability to form sclerotia — highly resilient, melanized resting structures — allows it to survive in the soil for extended periods, waiting for favorable conditions to germinate and re-colonize root systems.

The pathogenic potential of this fungus arises when the symbiotic exchange is compromised. If the plant is under excessive physiological stress, the fungus may consume a disproportionate amount of carbohydrates without providing sufficient mineral benefits in return. This parasitic behavior weakens the tree, making it more susceptible to further damage from other soil-borne pathogens or environmental shifts.
