Unlike white or brown rot fungi, this organism primarily impacts the aesthetic value of wood by altering its pigmentation, although it can facilitate further colonization by more destructive wood-rotting pathogens.
The host range of Cephaloascus fragrans includes a variety of coniferous and deciduous trees. It is most frequently encountered in freshly cut logs and unseasoned timber. The fungus is often dispersed by wood-boring insects, particularly bark beetles, which act as vectors, carrying the spores into the inner layers of the tree bark and wood during their boring process.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as distinct patches of discolored wood, commonly referred to as sapstain. The affected areas may show irregular staining patterns that penetrate deep into the timber. Over time, if the conditions remain favorable for fungal growth, the area may become brittle, and in some cases, the presence of the fungus produces a characteristic odor, confirming its identification.
