Description
The causative agent of this disease is the microscopic fungus Cephalosporium lefroyi, a member of the Hyphomycetes group. This pathogen is known to specifically target the vascular system of coniferous species, causing systemic wilting and tissue necrosis within the affected woody parts.
The disease primarily affects various coniferous species, particularly spruce trees. The fungus enters the plant host through wounds in the bark, natural fissures, or feeding lesions created by wood-boring insects, which often serve as entry points for the fungal infection.
Symptoms of the infection include the yellowing and subsequent browning of needles, followed by premature needle drop and twig dieback. Internal diagnostics often reveal browning of the vascular tissues in the xylem, where the mycelium proliferates and hinders the transport of water and nutrients.
The spread and development of the pathogen are significantly favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus produces conidia which are disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and insect vectors that move between trees, facilitating the transmission of the disease through the stand.
The economic and ecological impact of this disease is severe, as it leads to the decline and mortality of infected conifers, reducing their aesthetic and commercial value. Management strategies focus on sanitation, specifically the removal of infected branches or entire trees, and the application of fungicides in nursery settings to prevent widespread outbreaks.
