Cephalotrichum infection is a fungal disease caused by species of the Cephalotrichum genus. These fungi are typically known as molds that colonize weakened, damaged, or decaying plant tissues. While often functioning as saprotrophs, they can act as opportunistic pathogens, causing significant quality loss in stored agricultural produce and young seedlings.

This pathogen affects a wide range of plants, including cereals, legumes, and various fruit-bearing vegetables. It is particularly notorious for its impact on seed viability, as it often colonizes the surface of seeds, leading to decay even before the seeds have a chance to germinate. High-density storage areas are the most common environments where this fungus proliferates.
