Ceratium is a genus of organisms recognized in phytopathology as agents capable of causing significant disease in various plant species. Although biologically categorized among dinoflagellates, in an agricultural context, they act as pathogens that induce necrotic lesions in host tissues, thereby disrupting essential plant physiological functions and metabolic processes.
This pathogen primarily targets perennial woody plants and several types of berry-bearing shrubs. Under high humidity conditions, it infects young shoots, foliage, and fruit, entering the host through natural openings or mechanical wounds, which leaves the plant highly susceptible to secondary microbial infections.
The primary clinical signs of infestation include the emergence of chlorotic spots, which eventually evolve into necrotic lesions. The surface of these affected areas often displays a distinct sporulation layer, resulting in premature leaf drop, stunted shoot growth, and general decline of the plant's structural integrity.
Disease development is heavily influenced by meteorological conditions, particularly high air humidity, frequent precipitation, and moderate temperatures, which facilitate the rapid spread of spores. Crowded plantings with poor air circulation are especially vulnerable, as these environments maintain the moisture levels required for the pathogen to thrive.
Control measures must be integrated, starting with rigorous sanitary pruning and the maintenance of proper plant spacing to improve canopy ventilation. Ensuring a balanced nutritional program helps strengthen the host's natural resistance. In cases of severe outbreaks, the application of systemic fungicides specifically approved for the target crop remains the most effective course of chemical defense.
