The causative agent belongs to the phylum Dinoflagellata. It is recognized for its unique, horned cell structure which allows for buoyancy regulation. In high densities, this organism dominates the phytoplankton community, creating an imbalance that hinders the development of beneficial aquatic microflora required for healthy pond ecosystems.
