Description

The Ceratobasidiaceae family comprises a diverse group of basidiomycetous fungi that act as significant soilborne plant pathogens. The most economically damaging member is the anamorphic stage Rhizoctonia solani, which is responsible for a wide range of diseases globally, collectively referred to as rhizoctonia diseases.

These fungi have a broad host range, infecting critical crops such as potatoes, cereals, legumes, and various vegetables. By attacking roots, tubers, and basal stems, the pathogen disrupts the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients, which often results in stunted development or total crop failure.

Diagnostic features of infection include necrotic lesions on roots and hypocotyls, often characterized by a distinct reddish-brown discoloration. In cases of seedling damping-off, the plant stem becomes water-soaked and collapses. Under favorable high-humidity conditions, a fine, cobweb-like mycelium may be observed on the soil surface or plant tissue.

The development of Ceratobasidiaceae is heavily dependent on soil moisture and temperature; they thrive in moist, warm conditions. Because these fungi can survive as sclerotia in the soil for several years, crop rotation alone is often insufficient, necessitating integrated management strategies to minimize the inoculum density.

Effective control strategies focus on disease prevention and minimizing pathogen spread. Key measures include the selection of resistant cultivars, the use of high-quality pathogen-free seed tubers, and the application of targeted soil or seed-treatment fungicides. Proper soil management, including effective drainage and the removal of infected crop debris, is also essential for maintaining long-term field health.
