Description
Ceratocystidosis refers to a range of serious vascular diseases caused by fungi within the Ceratocystidaceae family. These pathogens are known for causing lethal wilting and necrotic lesions in woody plants by colonizing their xylem and disrupting water and nutrient transport systems.
A wide variety of crops and landscape trees are susceptible to these fungi, including commercial fruit orchards, oak species, and many ornamental hardwoods. The fungi act as aggressive necrotrophs, invading plant tissues through wounds, pruning cuts, or via tunnels created by boring insects, which play a crucial role as disease vectors.
The disease typically manifests through yellowing or wilting leaves, sunken cankers on the main trunk or branches, and internal discoloration of the wood. In advanced stages, trees may exhibit severe bark cracking, heavy sap flow (gummosis), and progressive dieback that often leads to the complete death of the host.
The spread of the disease is highly dependent on humidity and temperature, with warm, wet conditions favoring sporulation and infection cycles. Because the spores are easily transported by wind or moisture, and insects can carry them directly into fresh wounds, the disease can spread rapidly within a dense stand of susceptible plants.
Management strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Preventive measures are the most effective: keeping plants healthy through proper irrigation and fertilization, maintaining strict hygiene by sanitizing tools with alcohol or bleach after each cut, and protecting bark from mechanical injury. When an infection is detected, prompt removal and safe disposal of affected branches or entire trees are necessary to contain the pathogen.
