Ceratocystiopsis is a genus of ascomycetous fungi known for causing sapwood stain, commonly referred to as blue stain, in various tree species. These fungi occupy an ecological niche that is closely linked with wood-boring insects, such as bark beetles, which serve as primary vectors for spreading fungal spores into the host's vascular system.

The fungus predominantly affects coniferous trees, including pines, spruces, and firs, although it can occasionally be found on deciduous species. The infection typically starts when adult beetles bore into the bark, carrying the fungal spores on their bodies. Once introduced into the wood, the fungi colonize the ray parenchyma, leading to the distinctive discoloration of the timber.

Symptoms of Ceratocystiopsis infection are most visible as dark blue, gray, or black streaks on the wood surface or in cross-sections. While the fungus does not cause significant structural degradation (wood rot) in its early stages, it heavily impacts the economic value of the timber by creating aesthetic defects that make the wood unsuitable for high-quality finishing applications.

The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture content and temperature. It thrives in humid conditions and warm weather, which are also favorable for the proliferation of the beetle vectors. Consequently, the disease spreads rapidly in forests that are already stressed due to drought, storm damage, or poor silvicultural management.

Management and prevention strategies focus on reducing insect pressure and maintaining timber health:

  • Implementing systematic sanitary logging to remove infested or dying trees from the forest.
  • Utilizing pheromone traps to monitor and control beetle populations.
  • Ensuring rapid processing and drying of logs after harvest to inhibit fungal growth.
  • Applying prophylactic fungicides to freshly cut logs if immediate transport is not possible.
