The fungus typically attacks conifer trees, with Scots pine being a primary host. The biological life cycle is closely linked to bark beetles and other wood-boring insects, which act as vectors, transporting the fungal spores directly into the tree's inner tissues while they create galleries for egg-laying.
Symptoms of the infection include distinct bluish, grey, or black discolorations visible on the transverse sections of logs. These stains are caused by the dark pigmentation of the fungal hyphae as they proliferate within the ray cells and parenchyma, effectively staining the internal wood structure.
