Description

Ceratocystis wilt is a severe fungal disease caused by the pathogen Ceratocystis cacaofunesta. This fungus invades the xylem tissues of the plant, disrupting the transport of water and mineral nutrients. The accumulation of mycelium and spores in the vascular vessels eventually leads to the sudden death of the tree.

The primary crop affected by this pathogen is the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). The disease is particularly devastating in Latin America, where it causes significant yield losses and necessitates the removal of affected orchards. It is considered one of the most critical diseases impacting cocoa production.

Symptoms of the infection include rapid wilting of leaves, which often remain attached to the twigs for a prolonged period. When the trunk or larger branches are cut, clear internal browning or black streaking of the xylem is visible. These necrotic streaks are a definitive symptom of the fungal colonization of the plant's vascular system.

Environmental conditions that favor disease spread include high humidity and the presence of wounds. The spores of the fungus are primarily disseminated by wind, water splashes, and various wood-boring beetles that are attracted to the odors released by the decaying wood of infected trees.

Management and prevention practices are essential to control the spread of this pathogen:

  • Prompt identification and eradication of infected trees to eliminate inoculum sources.
  • Disinfection of pruning tools after working on every individual tree.
  • Minimizing mechanical injuries to tree trunks during agricultural operations.
  • Implementing integrated pest management to control beetle populations acting as vectors.
  • Focusing on breeding and planting genetically resistant varieties of cacao.
