Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Ceratocystis caryae, an ascomycete known for causing lethal vascular wilts. This pathogen is highly specialized and targets the tissues of Carya species, disrupting the internal transport systems essential for the tree's survival and growth.
Pecan trees (Carya illinoinensis) are the primary hosts for this pathogen. The fungus typically gains entry into the tree through bark wounds caused by mechanical damage, pruning, or the feeding activity of wood-boring insects. Trees that are already stressed due to environmental factors are significantly more susceptible to infection.
Initial symptoms are characterized by sudden wilting of foliage on individual branches. As the disease progresses, the leaves turn chlorotic and necrotic, often remaining attached to the tree for a period. Upon closer inspection of the bark, dark brown or black discolourations in the cambium layer confirm the presence of the pathogen.
Environmental conditions that favor high humidity and moderate temperatures accelerate the development of the disease. Furthermore, the spread of the fungus is largely facilitated by insect vectors, such as the pecan bark beetle, which carries fungal spores into new wounds. The pathogen can also be spread through contaminated pruning tools.
The impact of Ceratocystis caryae is severe, often resulting in the rapid decline and death of the infected tree. Because the infection systemic and deeply penetrates the woody tissue, chemical control measures are limited and usually ineffective once the disease is well-established, making prevention the priority.
