The disease is caused by the ascomycete fungus Ceratocystis ficicola, which is responsible for severe wilt and necrosis in woody plants. This pathogen primarily targets the vascular system of the host, impeding the transport of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the collapse of the tree's physiological functions.

The primary host for this fungus is the common fig (Ficus carica). The pathogen enters the plant through wounds, such as pruning cuts, cracks in the bark caused by environmental factors, or damage resulting from wood-boring insects, making the orchard highly vulnerable.

Symptoms typically begin with sudden wilting and yellowing of the foliage, often appearing on individual branches before spreading to the entire canopy. A diagnostic sign is the internal browning or blackening of the vascular tissue, which can be easily observed by making a cross-section of an affected branch or the main trunk.

The development and spread of Ceratocystis ficicola are favored by warm temperatures and high humidity. Spores can be disseminated through splashing rain, irrigation water, and contaminated pruning tools. Additionally, insects that feed on the wood and bark serve as critical vectors for the pathogen, introducing it directly into the tree's interior.
