Description
Ceratocystis lukuohia is a fungal pathogen responsible for the devastating condition known as Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death (ROD). This disease poses an existential threat to the native forests of Hawaii, as it targets the iconic ʻōhiʻa lehua tree (Metrosideros polymorpha) with remarkable speed and high mortality rates.
The fungus acts as a vascular wilt pathogen. By invading the sapwood, it produces spores and mycelium that clog the xylem, preventing the upward movement of water. This blockage leads to systemic water stress, causing the tree to succumb to drought-like symptoms despite the presence of moisture in the soil.
Typical symptoms of infection include a sudden change in foliage color, moving from green to yellow and then brown in a matter of weeks. Unlike other diseases that cause gradual decline, trees affected by Ceratocystis lukuohia often appear healthy right up until the moment the wilt begins. Internally, the wood exhibits characteristic dark staining, a hallmark of the fungal colonization.
Disease spread is facilitated by wind-borne spores, water runoff, and human activity. Soil clinging to vehicles, hiking boots, or gardening tools can transport the fungus over long distances. Furthermore, any physical wounding of the tree—whether from animal activity or maintenance equipment—greatly increases the likelihood of spore entry and successful infection.
Currently, there is no known cure for infected trees, making rigorous biosecurity the primary defense. Prevention protocols involve sanitizing all tools with 70% isopropyl alcohol or bleach solutions, restricting the movement of ʻōhiʻa wood and soil products, and avoiding unnecessary damage to bark during forest management operations to mitigate the risk of pathogen transmission.
