Ceratocystis polychroma is a dangerous phytopathogenic fungus belonging to the division Ascomycota. The disease causes vascular wilt and deep tissue necrosis in woody and shrub species, disrupting plant life processes by obstructing the vascular system. This pathogen is a specialized parasite capable of rapid spread within plantation environments.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are crops of the Myrtaceae family, particularly causing significant damage to clove trees (Syzygium) and other tropical fruit crops. In specific cases, it can affect other woody plants in regions with climates favorable to the fungus, thereby reducing their productivity and overall vigor.
Symptoms of the infection include premature yellowing and shedding of leaves, necrosis of branches, and the formation of characteristic dark spots on the trunk at the point of fungal entry. In cases of severe infection, terminal shoot dieback and xylem vessel clogging occur, leading to the rapid death of the entire plant if intervention is delayed.
The development of the disease is closely linked to high humidity in both air and soil, as well as the presence of mechanical wounds on the tree bark. The fungus invades tissues through wounds sustained during pruning, pest activity, or adverse weather conditions. Spore dispersal is often facilitated by insect vectors, wind, or contaminated agricultural tools.
Control measures involve strict phytosanitary oversight, the use of resistant varieties, and regular disinfection of tools after working on each individual tree. Upon detection of infection hotspots, it is necessary to perform sanitary pruning of affected parts, followed by their immediate destruction. To prevent spore spread, it is recommended to minimize deep bark injuries and maintain optimal irrigation management on plantations.
