The family Ceratomycetaceae belongs to the order Laboulbeniales, representing a specialized group of fungi that are obligate parasites of arthropods. Unlike common crop pathogens, these fungi do not infect plants directly but instead interact with the insects that inhabit and feed on agricultural crops.

The pathogen thrives by attaching its thallus and perithecia to the chitinous cuticle of the host insect. This biological interaction is characterized by high specificity, where the fungus relies on the host's movement and behavior to transmit spores to other insects within the agroecosystem.

These fungi can be found in various crop environments where insect populations are sufficiently dense. While they do not cause direct damage to the vegetation, their presence is often viewed as a natural regulatory mechanism that helps control the growth of harmful insect populations throughout the growing season.

Symptoms of infection are visible on the exterior of the host, manifesting as dark, horn-like, or spine-shaped fungal structures.
