Ceratostomataceae is a family of ascomycetous fungi that act as plant pathogens, primarily targeting various tree species and woody shrubs. These fungi are known for colonizing host tissues, specifically affecting the bark and vascular systems, which can lead to significant degradation of the plant's structural and physiological integrity.
Host susceptibility typically involves fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, and certain forest species. The fungus usually gains entry through physical wounds, pruning cuts, or damage inflicted by boring insects. Once inside, it utilizes the host's nutrients, causing systemic stress that can eventually compromise the entire organism if left untreated.
Symptoms are often manifested as localized cankers, discoloration of the bark, and the presence of small fruiting bodies known as perithecia on the surface of the infected areas. Growers may notice dieback of terminal branches, premature foliage loss, and a general decline in the plant's vigor, which serves as a clinical indicator of internal tissue colonization.
Environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and prolonged moisture on plant surfaces, are critical for the dispersal and germination of fungal spores. The disease spreads most aggressively when the host is under stress from drought or improper pruning, as these factors weaken the natural defense mechanisms of the plant against incoming infections.
Agricultural management strategies focus on preventing spore colonization through sanitation and chemical control. Key practices include the immediate removal and destruction of infected wood, the application of antifungal sealants to pruning wounds, and the use of preventative fungicide sprays during vulnerable periods of the growing season to minimize the risk of secondary infections.
