Description
The fungus Cercospora amaryllidis is the primary causal agent of cercospora leaf spot, a damaging condition that affects various species within the Amaryllidaceae family. This pathogen is classified as an Ascomycete fungus and thrives by invading the plant tissues, leading to localized necrosis and general physiological decline of the affected host.
Target cultures for this pathogen primarily include Amaryllis, Hippeastrum, Crinum, and related bulbous plants. These plants are susceptible both in indoor environments, such as greenhouses or home collections, and in outdoor gardens where climate conditions mimic the humid environment favored by the fungus.
The visual symptoms typically manifest as small, circular or irregular spots on the foliage. Initially appearing as chlorotic or pale dots, they progress to reddish-brown or dark lesions often surrounded by a yellow halo. As the infection progresses, the lesions coalesce, resulting in widespread leaf blight and premature senescence.
Environmental triggers for the spread of the disease are primarily high relative humidity, stagnant air, and moderate to warm temperatures.
