Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Cercospora antirrhini, which primarily targets the genus Antirrhinum, commonly known as snapdragons. It is a foliage-based pathogen that thrives in environments where host plants are densely populated and humidity levels are high.
The primary symptoms appear as small, circular, or irregular spots on the leaves, which are typically light brown with a darker border. Under conditions of high relative humidity, the centers of these lesions produce an ash-grey or olive-colored mycelial growth, indicating the production of fungal spores.
The pathogen spreads through the dispersion of conidia, which are carried by splashing water, wind, or garden tools. The fungus survives unfavorable conditions as mycelium or conidia within infected plant debris remaining in the soil, allowing the disease to recur in subsequent planting seasons if sanitation is neglected.
In terms of economic and aesthetic impact, the disease severely hinders the plant's photosynthetic capacity. When the foliage is heavily spotted, premature senescence occurs, leading to leaf drop, stunted growth, and a significant decrease in the number and quality of flower spikes.
To effectively manage the disease, strict sanitary practices are essential, including the immediate removal of infected plant tissue. Integrating fungicides, particularly those containing chlorothalonil or copper-based compounds, is often necessary in greenhouses or nurseries. Proper irrigation management, such as drip irrigation instead of overhead watering, is critical to reduce leaf wetness periods and limit infection spread.
