The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Cercospora brassicicola, a pathogen that exclusively targets plants in the Brassicaceae family. It is recognized as a significant fungal disease that thrives in specific environmental conditions and can cause severe damage to the foliage of various crops if left unmanaged during the growing season.
This pathogen affects a wide variety of cruciferous plants, such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, and radish. The disease can occur in both field and greenhouse environments. While it primarily targets the leaves, it can also manifest on the stems and seed pods of host plants, severely impacting their photosynthetic capacity and general health.
Symptoms initially appear as small, circular, or irregular spots on the leaves. These spots are typically gray to tan in color, often surrounded by a dark brown or purple border. As the disease progresses, the center of the lesion may become brittle and eventually fall out, leading to a shot-hole appearance. In humid conditions, a fuzzy gray mold consisting of fungal spores often appears on the spots.
Development of Cercospora brassicicola is favored by high humidity and warm temperatures, typically ranging from 20°C to 25°C. The spores are primarily dispersed by wind, splashing rain, or overhead irrigation. The fungus survives the winter on crop debris in the soil, on infected seeds, and on volunteer cruciferous weeds, which act as a reservoir for the primary inoculum.
The economic impact of the disease is significant, as it leads to premature leaf senescence and defoliation. This reduction in the plant's photosynthetic area limits the development of commercial harvestable parts such as heads or roots. In severe cases, the entire crop may suffer from stunted growth, reduced quality, and lower market value, making preventive measures and timely interventions essential.
