Description
Pathogen and disease type. Cercospora leaf spot, caused by the fungus Cercospora canescens, is a significant fungal disease impacting various agricultural crops. The pathogen is classified within the group of imperfect fungi and primarily survives as mycelium on crop debris within the soil or as dormant spores, making it a persistent threat in continuous cropping systems where sanitation is poor.
Affected crops. The disease predominantly affects legumes (family Fabaceae). Major crops susceptible to Cercospora canescens include soybeans, common beans, mung beans, and cowpeas. The fungus is host-specific enough to cause epidemics in monoculture fields but maintains its population through survival in weeds and wild relatives of these pulses.
Symptoms and signs. The disease manifests as distinctive lesions on the foliage, which can spread rapidly under favorable conditions.
- Development of small, circular to angular spots with gray centers and reddish-brown margins.
- Presence of gray, fuzzy sporulation on the underside of leaves during periods of high humidity.
- Severe yellowing (chlorosis) and early leaf drop occurring prematurely.
- Infection of pods and stems, often leading to reduced seed filling and overall pod shriveling.
Development conditions and damage. The fungus thrives in warm and humid climates, with optimal infection occurring at temperatures between 25°C and 30°C combined with frequent leaf wetness. The damage is severe because the disease disrupts photosynthesis, causing leaf senescence and yield reduction. In cases of high disease pressure, losses in grain quality and weight can be substantial, often exceeding 40%.
Management and prevention. Successful disease management relies on an integrated approach. Essential practices include rotating legumes with non-host crops, deep plowing to bury infested residue, and using certified disease-free seeds. Foliar fungicides are recommended for large-scale operations once symptoms appear, particularly during the flowering and pod-filling stages, to protect the canopy and preserve yield potential.
