Description
The causative agent of chicory leaf spot is the fungus Cercospora cichorii. This pathogen is a significant threat to chicory crops worldwide, as it affects the foliage directly, interfering with the plant's metabolic processes. The fungus overwinters in infected crop debris left in the field and can also be disseminated via contaminated seeds, serving as a primary inoculum source.
The disease primarily targets chicory plants (Cichorium intybus). It thrives in environments where high relative humidity and moderate to warm temperatures prevail. Frequent rainfall, heavy morning dews, and prolonged periods of leaf wetness facilitate the rapid spread of spores from plant to plant throughout the growing season.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as discrete spots on the leaves. Initially, these spots are small and appear chlorotic or light brown. As the disease progresses, they expand, developing a characteristic grey or brown center with a darker, often purplish or brown, necrotic border. Under humid conditions, a fuzzy fungal growth may be visible on the undersides of the spots.
The economic impact of the disease is linked to significant yield losses. Because the pathogen destroys leaf tissue, the plant's ability to produce energy via photosynthesis is severely compromised. This leads to stunted root development and poor quality of the harvested produce, which is particularly critical for industrial chicory production where high carbohydrate content is essential.
Management strategies require an integrated approach to maintain crop health and minimize infection risks:
- Implementing a strict crop rotation cycle to avoid field reinfection.
- Removing and destroying crop residues immediately after harvest to reduce inoculum.
- Applying appropriate foliar fungicides when environmental conditions favor disease outbreaks.
- Selecting resistant varieties or those with documented tolerance to foliar diseases.
