Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Cercospora duddiae, a pathogen belonging to the group of imperfect fungi. This parasite specializes in attacking the foliage of various plants, primarily cucurbits, causing localized tissue necrosis that expands over time as the colony grows.
Cucurbitaceous crops, such as cucumbers, are the primary hosts for this pathogen. The infection is particularly problematic in intensive production systems where high plant density and constant irrigation provide stable conditions for fungal germination and colonization of the leaf tissues.
Symptoms initially appear as small, chlorotic spots that gradually enlarge and become necrotic, often developing a distinct border. In favorable conditions, the characteristic grayish-brown fungal mycelium and spores manifest as a fine, velvety coating on the undersides of the leaves or directly on the spots.
Environmental factors are key to the progression of this disease. Cercospora duddiae thrives in warm temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C and high relative humidity. The spores are effectively dispersed by splashing water, wind currents, and physical contact with contaminated tools or clothing during field maintenance.
