Description
Pathogen and disease type. Cercospora leaf spot is caused by the pathogenic fungus Cercospora gerberae. This is a common fungal disease belonging to the group of leaf spots. The pathogen reproduces primarily through conidia, which are efficiently spread by water splashes, air currents, and handling, especially in high-density greenhouse environments.
Host plants. The disease specifically targets plants within the Gerbera genus. It is a significant problem for commercial gerbera growers, affecting both cut flower production and potted plant nurseries. Younger plants are often more susceptible to infection, particularly if they are under environmental stress.
Symptoms and signs of infection. Initial symptoms manifest as small, circular or irregular spots on the foliage. These lesions are typically reddish-brown with a distinct pale center. As the infection progresses, these spots expand and coalesce, leading to significant tissue necrosis. A grayish-olive fungal growth (sporulation) can often be observed on the underside of the leaf spots in humid conditions.
Environmental conditions. Cercospora gerberae thrives under warm and humid conditions. High relative humidity (exceeding 85%) and temperatures between 20°C and 25°C provide the ideal environment for the pathogen to thrive. Leaf wetness is critical, as the spores require a film of water to germinate and penetrate the host tissue.
Harmfulness and control measures. The disease causes premature senescence of leaves, which reduces the plant's overall vigor and lowers the market value of the flowers. Effective control begins with strict sanitation, including the removal and destruction of infected plant debris. To prevent outbreaks, it is crucial to manage humidity through proper ventilation and ensure irrigation practices minimize leaf wetness. Protective copper-based or systemic fungicides should be applied at the first signs of symptoms.
