Description
The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Cercospora gigantea, a specialized pathogen known for causing distinct foliar necrotic lesions. It belongs to the group of mitosporic fungi that propagate through conidia. The fungus thrives in a parasitic mode, drawing nutrients from the host plant's cells, which leads to tissue collapse and the eventual formation of large, diagnostic spots on the foliage.
The primary hosts of Cercospora gigantea include various species of the Asteraceae family, most notably the genus Artemisia. In agricultural settings, it can be particularly troublesome for growers of medicinal herbs and ornamental plants. The pathogen is host-specific to a degree, yet it can cause widespread destruction within a plantation if the environmental conditions remain favorable for its life cycle.
Initial symptoms include the appearance of small chlorotic spots that expand rapidly to cover large areas of the leaf surface. As the fungus matures, it produces a brownish-gray mycelial mat within the lesions, which consists of spores (conidia) designed for rapid dispersal. Infected leaves eventually turn brittle, develop a necrotic appearance, and drop prematurely, severely hindering the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
The spread of this disease is highly dependent on meteorological factors. Periods of sustained high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide the necessary environment for the germination of fungal spores. Splashing raindrops are the primary mechanism for the upward movement of spores from the soil or lower leaves to the healthy upper parts of the canopy.
Integrated disease management (IDM) is the most effective approach to mitigating the damage caused by Cercospora gigantea. Control strategies include:
- Strict sanitation protocols, including the removal and disposal of infected plant debris.
- Crop rotation to break the life cycle of the pathogen in the soil.
- Maintaining optimal plant spacing to promote airflow and reduce canopy humidity.
- Application of registered foliar fungicides when weather forecasts predict extended humid conditions.
