Description
The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Cercospora insulana, an imperfect fungus known for inducing necrotic lesions on plant leaves. This pathogen specifically targets the foliage of its host, disrupting normal photosynthesis and plant development.
The primary host for this fungus is the tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera). While it may not always be lethal, the infection significantly impacts the ornamental health of the tree, leading to reduced vigor and aesthetic degradation in both landscaping and nursery settings.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, circular, or angular spots on the leaf blades. These lesions are often light in color initially but darken to brown or grey as the necrotic area expands. Under humid conditions, a velvety, dark spore-bearing layer may be visible on the underside of the affected leaf tissue.
Environmental factors such as high relative humidity and prolonged leaf wetness are critical for the development of Cercospora leaf spot. The fungus overwinters in fallen debris, and the primary inoculum is dispersed during the growing season by splashing rain or wind-driven air currents, leading to secondary infections on healthy foliage.
Management and prevention strategies focus on sanitation and chemical intervention. It is essential to remove and dispose of all fallen leaves at the end of the season to reduce the primary inoculum load. During the growing season, applications of appropriate fungicides and maintaining proper plant spacing to ensure air circulation are recommended to mitigate the disease spread.
