Description
Cercospora malayensis is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing leaf spot disease in various plants belonging to the Malvaceae family. It is a highly specialized microorganism that disrupts the host plant's metabolism by invading leaf tissues and causing premature senescence.
The primary host for this pathogen is okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). In commercial okra production, the disease can cause significant economic losses by reducing the plant's leaf area, leading to stunted growth and a considerable decrease in both the quantity and quality of the harvestable pods.
The symptoms typically manifest as irregularly shaped or angular lesions on the leaves, which are delimited by leaf veins. As the infection progresses, these lesions turn greyish-brown to dark brown. Under high humidity conditions, a velvety grey fungal growth, consisting of conidiophores and conidia, becomes visible on the underside of the affected leaf surfaces.
The development of the disease is strictly dependent on climatic factors. High relative humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm temperatures are ideal for the rapid dissemination of spores. The pathogen survives between cropping seasons primarily in infected plant debris, which acts as the main inoculum source for the subsequent crop cycle.
Effective management strategies rely on an integrated approach. Essential practices include:
- Implementing strict crop rotation programs to break the pathogen's life cycle.
- Sanitation, which involves the removal and destruction of crop residues post-harvest.
- Ensuring adequate plant spacing to promote air circulation and reduce leaf wetness.
