Description
The fungal pathogen Cercospora moricola is the causative agent of mulberry leaf spot. This disease primarily targets plants within the Morus genus. As an obligate parasite, it disrupts the physiological processes of the leaves, directly impacting the health and vigor of the mulberry trees.
The disease affects various species of mulberry, which are economically significant for the sericulture industry. By damaging the leaf tissue, Cercospora moricola reduces the nutrient quality of the leaves, which is detrimental to silkworm farming and negatively affects the fruit-bearing capacity of ornamental or orchard trees.
Symptoms initially appear as small, irregular, or circular spots on the leaf surface. These spots are typically brownish or dark red, surrounded by a faint yellow halo. As the infection progresses, the center of the lesion may turn grey or white, and the leaf tissue around the infection site eventually dies, leading to premature leaf drop.
The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The pathogen thrives during late summer rain showers. Spores are easily disseminated via wind and water splashes, allowing the disease to spread rapidly throughout an orchard or a commercial plantation if left unmanaged.
