The fungus Cercospora nicotianae is the primary causal agent of cercospora leaf spot, a prevalent disease in tobacco production. This pathogen specifically targets the Solanaceae family, with tobacco and rustica being the most susceptible commercial crops, leading to significant physiological stress in infected plants.
The characteristic symptoms of the disease include the appearance of small, circular or irregular spots on the foliage. These lesions initially exhibit a reddish-brown color, eventually developing a distinct grayish-white center where the fungus produces its spores. As the infection progresses, these spots expand and coalesce, leading to severe chlorosis and leaf necrosis.
