Cercospora nigellae is a pathogenic fungus responsible for the leaf spot disease in nigella (black cumin) plants. As a specialized pathogen, it disrupts the physiological processes of the host plant, specifically targeting the foliage and reproductive structures, which leads to significant agricultural losses if left unmanaged.
The disease primarily affects Nigella sativa and related species. Under favorable conditions, the infection spreads rapidly, colonizing the plant tissue and causing the formation of necrotic lesions. The pathogen is highly host-specific, focusing its developmental cycle on the botanical features of this particular crop.
The main symptoms include the appearance of small, chlorotic spots that progressively turn brown or dark grey.
