Cercospora raphiae is a fungal pathogen responsible for leaf spot disease in various species of Raphia palms. As a member of the Cercospora genus, it is known for producing distinctive necrotic lesions on foliage. This pathogen disrupts the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis, which can lead to reduced growth vigor and, in severe cases, plant death.

The disease primarily targets palm plants growing in humid tropical and subtropical regions. The fungus thrives in environments where high relative humidity and moderate temperatures persist for extended periods. Ornamental plantations and nurseries are particularly vulnerable due to the crowded conditions that often restrict airflow around the palms.

The primary symptom of this infection is the development of distinct spots on the leaves. These lesions typically start as yellow or light brown chlorotic areas that gradually darken to a brown or grey color with a well-defined border. Over time, the center of the spot may drop out or the entire leaf may become necrotic and prematurely drop, significantly affecting the aesthetic and physical health of the tree.

Environmental conditions are the main drivers of the disease cycle. The pathogen relies on water films—such as those created by heavy rainfall, dew, or overhead irrigation—to allow spore germination and penetration into the host tissue. Spores are disseminated by wind gusts and splashing water, ensuring rapid spread throughout a nursery or plantation if left unmanaged.

Effective management of this disease requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Key practices for successful control include:
