The causal agent of this plant disease is the fungus Cercospora zeina, a highly specific pathogen belonging to the class Ascomycota. It is recognized as a major threat to corn production worldwide, particularly in temperate and humid regions where conditions favor its rapid reproduction and sporulation.

The primary host for this pathogen is maize (Zea mays). The fungus overwinters in infested crop residues left on the soil surface, serving as a primary inoculum source for the following season. Continuous cropping of corn significantly increases the risk of severe outbreaks of the disease.

Symptoms typically begin on the lower leaves as small, linear, rectangular spots that are restricted by the leaf veins. As the disease develops, these lesions turn grey or tan in color and may coalesce, causing large areas of the leaf tissue to become necrotic. Severe infections lead to premature senescence of the entire plant.

The development of Cercospora zeina is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly humidity levels exceeding 90% and temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C. Prolonged periods of leaf wetness are critical for spore germination and colonization, facilitating the spread of the fungus via wind and rain splashes.

The impact of the disease on crop yield is significant, as it drastically reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. This loss of green leaf area impairs grain filling, resulting in reduced test weight and overall yield losses. Effective management strategies include the implementation of resistant corn hybrids, conservation tillage practices to bury inoculum, crop rotation, and the judicious application of fungicides during the critical growth stages.
