Description
Cercosporella refers to a genus of fungi, most notably Cercosporella herpotrichoides (also known as Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides), which causes a devastating condition known as eyespot disease. This fungal pathogen primarily targets the stem bases of winter cereals, severely impacting the vascular integrity of the plant.
The disease affects a wide range of monocots, including winter wheat, winter barley, rye, and triticale. By invading the leaf sheaths and the stem base, the fungus disrupts the plant's ability to transport water and nutrients. If left uncontrolled, the structural damage leads to extensive crop lodging, causing significant economic losses at harvest.
Symptoms are distinct and usually appear during the spring. Lesions are oval or spindle-shaped with a dark brown edge and a lighter, necrotic center, earning the name "eyespot." In advanced stages, the internal stem tissue becomes colonized, resulting in a hollowed, fragile base that snaps easily under the weight of the developing ear.
The development of the fungus is heavily favored by cool, wet weather conditions, particularly during the autumn and spring months. The pathogen survives in infested crop debris in the soil, which serves as the primary inoculum source. Dense planting and early sowing dates are known to significantly increase the risk of rapid epidemic development.
Management and prevention strategies are essential to minimize yield impact. These include implementing a diversified crop rotation to reduce inoculum pressure, choosing varieties with high stalk strength, and managing plant density. Chemical control with registered fungicides is typically applied during the tillering stage to prevent the infection from reaching the stem tissues.
