The disease known as safflower cercosporella leaf spot is caused by the fungus Cercosporella carthami. This pathogen is a significant threat to safflower cultivation, specializing in infecting various parts of the plant during its active growth phases. It survives as mycelium or spores on infected crop residues buried in the topsoil.
This fungal pathogen specifically attacks safflower (Carthamus tinctorius). The infection targets leaves, stems, and flower heads, leading to decreased photosynthetic efficiency. High levels of infection can cause severe defoliation and yield losses, as the plant struggles to produce enough energy for seed development.
Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic spots on the foliage. These lesions are often light brown or greyish with a distinct, darker border. In humid conditions, the pathogen produces conidia, visible as a fine, dusty layer on the lesions. If left unmanaged, the spots can coalesce, leading to premature wilting of the affected tissues.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental moisture. Periods of prolonged rainfall, high relative humidity, and mild temperatures are ideal for the sporulation and dissemination of Cercosporella carthami. Wind and water splashes are the primary mechanisms for moving spores from lower leaves to the upper canopy.
Effective control requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation and the destruction of infected residues are fundamental. Chemical control, involving the application of appropriate fungicides, is effective if symptoms are detected early. Growers should also prioritize planting resistant cultivars to reduce the risk of epidemic outbreaks in their fields.
