Description

The causative agent of Cercosporella leaf spot is the fungus Cercosporella rubi. This pathogen is classified as a foliage-attacking fungus, which causes significant damage by targeting the leaves and sometimes the stems of raspberry and blackberry plants. The fungus survives the winter primarily in infected plant debris left on the ground or within the bark of affected canes.

The disease primarily impacts Rubus species, including various cultivars of red and black raspberries as well as blackberries. It tends to proliferate in dense, poorly managed plantings where air circulation is restricted. These environmental conditions create a favorable microclimate for spore germination and rapid mycelial development during the growing season.

The primary symptoms are manifested as round or irregular spots on the leaves. Initially, these spots are brownish in color, but as the fungus develops, the centers turn gray or white, often surrounded by a distinct dark margin. As the infection progresses, these spots may coalesce, leading to severe leaf necrosis, leaf yellowing, and premature senescence of the canopy.

Development and spread of the pathogen are driven by high humidity and frequent rainfall. The conidia are disseminated primarily through water splashes during storms and air currents. Warm, wet springs and summers are particularly conducive to outbreaks, allowing the pathogen to move rapidly through a field if no control measures are implemented.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it severely reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plants. Weakened plants exhibit reduced fruit quality, smaller berry size, and diminished cane vigor. In severe cases, the cumulative stress can lead to the death of canes, especially during harsh winter conditions, leading to major production losses.
