Cerebella of cereals is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Cerebella andropogonis. In agronomy, this fungus is typically classified as a secondary parasite that colonizes the inflorescences of various grasses, particularly those already infected by smut fungi, such as species from the Sphacelotheca genus.
The disease primarily targets cereals like sorghum and millet, as well as several wild grass species. The fungus thrives on tissues that have been weakened or structurally altered by other primary infections, making it an indicator of secondary colonization within a crop canopy.
The hallmark symptom of Cerebella is the development of dense, black to dark brown stromatic structures on the plant's inflorescences. These structures have a distinctive convoluted, wrinkled surface that resembles the folds of a brain, which is the primary identifying feature during field inspections.
Development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate to warm temperatures. During such periods, the spores germinate rapidly on the smut-infected heads, leading to the rapid growth of the fungus and extensive mycelial development.
