Description
Cerinomyces rot is a group of fungal diseases caused by basidiomycete fungi belonging to the genus Cerinomyces. These pathogens are primarily wood-decaying fungi that degrade structural components of woody plants, leading to a compromised internal architecture of the host tissue.
The fungus typically infects trees and woody shrubs, often targeting specimens that have already been weakened by environmental stress or mechanical damage. Once established, the mycelium penetrates the bark and xylem, progressively breaking down complex organic compounds and leading to structural instability in the branches or main stems.
The most visible symptoms include the appearance of small, gelatinous to waxy basidiocarps, often exhibiting bright yellow or orange pigments on the bark surface. As the infection progresses, the inner wood may show localized discoloration, softening, and, in severe cases, the development of distinct rot pockets that weaken the overall structural integrity of the affected plant.
Development and spread of Cerinomyces are heavily influenced by humidity and moisture levels. High relative humidity and rainfall facilitate the germination of basidiospores, which are then disseminated by wind or splashing water. Poor aeration within the canopy and the presence of open wounds act as primary entry points for the pathogen.
Management of Cerinomyces rot focuses on sanitation and preventive maintenance. Effective control strategies include the regular inspection of orchards and ornamental landscapes, immediate pruning of infected branches with proper sterilization of pruning tools, and ensuring proper tree health through balanced fertilization and irrigation to improve the plant's natural defense mechanisms.
