The Cerinomycetaceae family comprises a group of basidiomycetous fungi that function primarily as wood-decaying organisms. In an agricultural and forestry context, they are often identified as opportunistic pathogens capable of colonizing stressed or wounded plant tissues, thereby contributing to the decline of woody perennial crops.

These fungi typically affect trees that have suffered from environmental stress, such as drought, frost damage, or improper pruning. While they are often considered saprotrophs, their ability to invade living tissue through damaged bark makes them significant in managing the health of fruit orchards and diverse forest ecosystems.

Symptoms of infestation are marked by the appearance of gelatinous, cushion-shaped, or discoid fruiting bodies, which are typically bright yellow or orange. As the infection progresses internally, the affected wood begins to soften, loses structural integrity, and shows visible signs of decay, eventually leading to the death of branches or complete tree failure.
