Ceriporia is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Polyporales that is recognized as a causative agent of white rot in woody plants. In agronomy and forestry, this organism is studied primarily for its ability to decompose wood by breaking down lignin and cellulose, which severely compromises the structural integrity of host plants.

The fungus typically attacks a wide variety of hardwood and occasionally softwood species. It manifests as a wood-destroying organism that can thrive on both dead logs and living trees that have previously sustained mechanical damage or stress, effectively acting as a secondary parasite that facilitates the decline of the plant.

Symptoms of an infection include the presence of fruit bodies, which are often thin, encrusting, and porous, typically appearing on the bark or at the base of the trunk. Internally, the wood becomes bleached, spongy, and brittle. This advanced state of decay makes the tree susceptible to breakage, posing a risk in orchards, parks, and managed forests.

Development and spread are largely determined by environmental factors such as high humidity and temperatures that support fungal growth. Spores are dispersed through the air or by insects and gain entry into the tree via pruning wounds, frost cracks, or sites of previous mechanical injury. Once established, the mycelium spreads rapidly if conditions remain damp.

Integrated management is essential to prevent the spread of Ceriporia in agricultural settings. Preventive measures include:

  • prompt removal and destruction of infected wood and debris;
  • sealing pruning wounds with fungicidal or antiseptic pastes;
  • maintaining plant vigor through balanced fertilization and proper irrigation;
  • monitoring for signs of decay and implementing sanitary felling when necessary to prevent the spread to adjacent healthy trees.
