Belonging to the order Polyporales, it is primarily known as a saprotroph that decomposes dead wood, but under specific stress conditions, it can colonize weakened living trees, contributing to their premature decline and structural degradation.
The fungus typically affects broad-leaved trees, including oak, beech, and birch. It tends to establish itself in areas of the tree where the bark has been damaged by mechanical impact, frost, or insect activity. By penetrating these wounds, the mycelium reaches the heartwood and sapwood, where it begins the enzymatic breakdown of lignin and cellulose, which are essential for the structural integrity of the plant.
Symptoms of infestation include the whitening and softening of the wood tissue, which loses its rigidity and becomes fibrous. One of the most distinct signs is the appearance of flat, crust-like fruiting bodies with a porous underside on the surface of decaying wood. These structures produce spores that ensure the fungus can spread to adjacent trees or organic debris within the plantation.
Environmental conditions such as high ambient humidity, lack of sunlight, and stagnant air promote the rapid spread of the pathogen. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind currents and moisture, often settling in micro-cracks on the tree trunk. The rate of decay increases significantly during warm, wet seasons, which provide the ideal moisture content for fungal metabolic activity.
Effective management and protection strategies focus on hygiene and physical tree care. This includes the regular removal of dead wood and stumps, which serve as primary reservoirs for the fungus. Pruning should be performed during dry weather, and all significant wounds on the bark should be sealed with specialized antifungal pastes to prevent spore entry and mycelial colonization.
