Cerrena albocinnamomea is a species of wood-decay fungus belonging to the Basidiomycota phylum. It acts as a saprotroph and occasional parasite, primarily targeting the lignin and cellulose components of wood. This fungus is known for its ability to break down woody tissues, causing significant structural decline in infected trees.
The host range of Cerrena albocinnamomea primarily includes various deciduous trees such as birch, aspen, alder, and sometimes fruit-bearing species. It is commonly found in forest ecosystems and poorly managed orchards, typically inhabiting the trunk, stumps, and larger limbs where wood density has already begun to weaken.
Symptoms of an infection include the presence of shelf-like or effused-reflexed fruiting bodies on the bark. These fruiting bodies are often leathery or corky in texture with a brownish-white surface and a distinctively toothed hymenium. Internally, the fungus induces white rot, which degrades the wood structure, making the tree susceptible to windbreak and mechanical failure.
Development and spread are favored by high humidity, poor aeration, and the presence of wounds or bark cracks that serve as entry points for spores. Shade and stagnant air conditions significantly increase the likelihood of colonization, especially in dense or unmaintained stands where debris and moisture accumulation provide an ideal growth substrate.
Management strategies focus on orchard hygiene, including the removal and destruction of infected wood and visible fruiting bodies to limit spore dispersal. Applying wound paint or fungicides to tree cuts can prevent new infections. Maintaining overall tree vitality through proper fertilization and watering is the most effective long-term preventative measure against this wood-destroying pathogen.
