It is scientifically important to clarify that Cetraria islandica, commonly known as Iceland moss, is not a plant disease or a pathogenic organism. It is a complex lichen—a symbiotic association between a fungus and an alga. In agricultural pathology, it is classified as an epiphyte, meaning it lives on the surface of plants without drawing nutrients from them.
Because it is not a pathogen, it does not attack or cause damage to agricultural crops. It does not penetrate plant tissues, cause lesions, rot, or stunting. Therefore, there are no symptoms of infection caused by this organism. In many cases, the presence of lichen on trees indicates a healthy and clean environment, as lichens are highly sensitive to air pollution.
Confusion between Cetraria islandica and actual plant diseases often arises from a misinterpretation of its physical presence on tree bark. While fungal pathogens often grow underneath or through the bark, causing necrosis, this lichen grows strictly on the outer layer, utilizing the tree as a passive substrate for physical support in a humid, cool climate.
The development of this lichen requires high atmospheric humidity and relatively clean air. It is primarily found in tundra and forest ecosystems where it performs ecological functions, such as soil stabilization and serving as a crucial forage resource for wild ungulates. It does not compete with agricultural crops for nutrients, water, or sunlight to a degree that would necessitate management.
There are no protective measures or treatments required for Cetraria islandica since it causes no harm to agricultural production. Agronomists and foresters should distinguish between non-harmful lichens and parasitic fungi that cause plant diseases. Mechanical removal is only performed for aesthetic purposes, as the lichen itself poses zero risk to the viability or productivity of plant hosts.
