The fungus Ceuthodiplospora robiniae is a pathogenic agent responsible for specific bark and wood diseases in woody plants. This organism functions as a necrotrophic parasite, causing tissue death by colonizing the cortical layers and disrupting the vascular system of the host plant.

The primary host for this fungus is the black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia). Trees that are physically damaged, weakened by environmental stress, or growing in unfavorable site conditions are significantly more susceptible to infection compared to healthy, vigorous specimens.

Symptoms of the disease manifest as localized necrosis of the bark, which eventually develops into sunken lesions or cankers. Within these necrotic areas, small black pycnidia erupt through the bark surface. These structures represent the reproductive stage of the fungus, facilitating the dispersal of spores to healthy tissues.

The development of the fungus is highly dependent on humidity levels and the availability of infection courts. Warm and wet weather conditions facilitate spore germination and mycelial growth within the host tissues. Once established, the fungus can progress rapidly, especially if the tree's natural defense mechanisms are compromised.

Management and prevention focus on minimizing the spread of inoculum within the stand. Effective strategies include the prompt removal and disposal of infected branches or trees to reduce the fungal population. Additionally, maintaining tree vigor through proper site selection and applying protective fungicides to pruning wounds can significantly mitigate the impact of the disease.
