It is a crustose lichen that acts as an epiphyte, living on the surface of bark. It does not penetrate the living tissues of the host plant and does not extract nutrients from the tree, making it entirely harmless to plants.

The lichen is commonly found on the rough bark of mature coniferous and deciduous trees, such as pine, spruce, and oak. It prefers the stable microenvironment provided by deep bark fissures, where organic matter and moisture accumulate, allowing the lichen to thrive in its symbiotic state alongside the tree without causing any structural or physiological damage.

Symptoms of its presence include a characteristic rusty-brown or yellowish powdery appearance on the bark. These are the apothecia, the fruiting bodies of the fungus, which often lead to confusion with plant diseases among inexperienced observers. Despite this visual resemblance to infections, the growth of the lichen is purely superficial and does not cause necrosis or decline in tree health.

The conditions for the development of Chaenotheca ferruginea are highly dependent on high atmospheric humidity and good air quality. It is typically found in older, established ecosystems where the bark has reached sufficient maturity to provide a stable substrate. In modern agricultural orchards, it is rarely observed because intensive management and environmental changes typically inhibit lichen development.

In terms of agricultural and environmental value, the presence of this lichen is a significant indicator of healthy, clean air. It is highly sensitive to air pollution and acid rain; therefore, its growth indicates a high degree of environmental purity. There are no protective or preventive measures required against this lichen, as it plays no role in crop damage and serves only as a valuable biological indicator.
