Chaetocalathus craterellus is a fungal species that can act as an opportunistic pathogen in agricultural and horticultural environments. Primarily known as a saprotroph that decomposes organic matter, it can invade stressed or weakened living tissues under favorable environmental conditions, acting as a structural parasite.

The host range includes various woody and herbaceous plants frequently grown in moist, shaded environments. In agricultural settings, it often affects vegetable crops and seedlings that come into contact with decaying plant matter, where the fungus initiates its spread from the debris to the living stalks and leaves.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as the appearance of whitish or cream-colored mycelial growth on the epidermis of the plant. As the infection progresses, the tissues underneath the mycelium become soft and discolored. The physical degradation of plant cells leads to wilting, necrosis, and, in severe cases, the collapse of the plant structure.
